It’s a question that comes up with every international trip – will you need a plug adapter or electrical converter to charge your devices?
After some trial and error with every type of prong adapter and converter combination out there, we finally gathered a setup we’re really happy with for both adapting plugs and electrical conversion.
Adapter vs. Converter
An adapter is used to change the head of the plug of your devices so that it will fit into the wall socket shaped used in another country. This just changes the shape, it has nothing to do with the current used.
A converter, however, actually transforms the current, which runs in some parts of the world at 110V and in others at 220 or 240 V. If you’re traveling to a country that uses another type of voltage, you’ll need more than just a plug adapter – you’ll need an adapter and a converter, or an all-in-one solution.
A lot of devices these days may not even need electrical conversion and are designed for 110V-220 or 240v. This is the case with most phones and computers, but its important to always check the specs of your devices so you’re not surprised later on when something goes wrong.
Best Universal Adapter and Converter
This is our ultimate all-in-one recommendation! If you want to make sure you have everything you need to be prepared for your trip, this is what you want. We purchased this unit before a big trip to India and it has been a fantastic product for us in several different countries.
This unit gives you the ability to charge multiple devices at once with three sockets and multiple USB ports, so you won’t need to travel with anything else. It’s also very compact for being an all-in-one solution and can handle a simple plug adaption or voltage conversion, allowing you to choose between the two. This is the best all-around device we’ve found on the market.
Best International Plug Adapter
Gone are the days of searching through the bottom of a suitcase for the correct adapter head – everything is right here, covering the plug styles used in nearly every country. At a lower price point, this is a fantastic option when you know you won’t need voltage conversion. Plus, you can’t beat the USB ports built right in, which will help you charge multiple devices at once
Best Travel Adapter with USB ports
This is a game changer for anyone traveling with any sort of tech equipment… which is basically everyone these days! We love this adapter for its ease of use with a ton of USB ports added, so you’ll get a ton of space and ability to charge multiple devices at once. It’s also extremely compact and the traveling case keeps it all together in your luggage.
Best Travel Converter for Hairdryer
Certain electrical devices like hair driers and curling irons are especially tricky and have extremely specific requirements for voltage conversion. I always recommend checking ahead to see if there is a hairdryer where you’ll be staying to avoid having to bring one at all.
However, if you will need one for your trip, this option is the best bet. It’s compact and tested on those tricky devices and won’t leave you wondering if you’re going to singe your hair off (this actually happened to my mom once while traveling in Italy…it was not a pretty sight!)
Are there any adapters or converters that you’ve used that you just need to let me know about? Share them in the comments – I love keeping up on what is new and helpful in travel gear!
