The eastern Cuban province of Holguin is well known for its stunning beaches and impressive all-inclusive beach resorts – but what of the historic heart of Holguin, one of Cuba’s largest and most important cities? This laidback but historic gem of a city is better known for its casa particular guest houses and tiny, locally-owned boutique hotels, which offer travelers a peak at the local, genuine side of Cuba.
As locals, we’ve had the chance to fall in love with often-overlooked Holguin time and time again. These are the best casa particular guest houses and places to stay in Holguin, Cuba.

What is a Casa Particular?
A casa particular is a room for rent or an entire property for rent. Casas particulares range from a spare room in a local’s home to private mansions and range in price from less than twenty dollars a night to hundreds.
Since they’ve been the most popular accommodation option in Cuba since long before Airbnb existed, casas particulares aren’t just rented through the Airbnb platform. I always find the best options for Cuba on Hotels.com – one of the platforms long used by renters in Cuba, and with the most listings!
Best Casas Particulares in Holguin
1. Villa Cristal
$ | Calle Fomento Entre Linea y Ave Cajigal
Villa Cristal is a charming but simple bed and breakfast located in the center of Holguin, near the downtown center but removed from the hustle and bustle (read: street noise) and just a ten-minute walk from popular attractions. Plus, hosts have bikes available to rent and can easily organize local taxis or transport to the beach.
Villa Cristal is midway between the Loma de la Cruz, a beautiful overlook of the city, and the downtown center, both of which are visible from the bed and breakfast. The bed and breakfast has two rooms for rent, both with private bathrooms and access to a large, shaded patio for relaxing and escaping the heat.

2. Villa La Roca
$ | Street 19 #2, Luz & Rio
Staying at Villa La Roca, in many ways, feels like staying in a hotel, though it has only three guest rooms – with large communal spaces including several patios, it has some great amenities. The rooms are clean and simple, but the hosts are fantastic and go out of the way for their guests.
There is a restaurant on-site, and the hosts are also great cooks, meaning you won’t have to go far to try delicious Cuban food. You’ll also love the rooftop terrace for a great sunset over the city.

If you’re looking for a pool from your stay in Holguin, Hostal La Casona is by far your best bet! While the pool is small, it makes a big difference on a hot afternoon – plus, the shaded patio with a hammock is a great place to pass the hottest part of the afternoon.
The rooms at Hostal La Casona are simple but clean, and the bathrooms are all modern and remodeled recently. Breakfast is included with the price of the room, and they’re lovingly prepared by the friendly and helpful hosts here. I know of several repeat visitors here, but the value and service speak for themselves.

4. Hostal Refugio de Reyes
$ | Peralejo 23, Entre Cervantes y Fomento
Located in the heart of Holguin, the long-time favorite casa particular, Hostal Refugio de Reyes, is easily one of our favorite places to stay in town. This tiny bed and breakfast has plenty to offer, but its highlight is the incredible patio, complete with a pool and garden.
Beyond just the outdoor space, this bed and breakfast has it all – rooms are neat and modern, bathrooms are remodeled and clean, and the hosts are lovely and so helpful. Their breakfast spread is generous, and the owners are incredibly personable and welcoming.

5. Casa Colonial Carmen
$ | Peralejo 78 entre Miró y Morales Lemus
Casa Colonial Carmen is one of the nicer historic boutique guest houses in Holguin, located directly in the center of town and with tons of charm to spare. Just a few blocks from some of the city’s main plazas and the best things to do in Holguin, it’s easily walkable to the rest of town.
Casa Colonial Carmen‘s rooms are basic but comfortable. Interior spaces, like the living and dining rooms and the central courtyard with tables and chairs, are a huge plus.

Long one of the most beloved casas particulares in Holguin, Xanadú B&B is a simple but welcoming three-room guest house just a few blocks from Parque Calixto Garcia and all the best things to do in Holguin. Clean, comfortable rooms are basic but well-equipped, and the internet on site is a big plus.

7. Casa Oscar
$ | Carretera Central 10, Entre Buenvavista y Constitución
Casa Oscar is home to just two simple but comfortable rooms with air conditioning and wifi included. One of the parts of Casa Oscar that we most appreciated was the large patio in front of the house – it’s perfect for morning coffee or an evening cocktail and feeling at home away from home in Holguin.
Casa Oscar is located a little bit outside of the historic center of town in a more residential area, making it a bit more challenging to walk to the central sights of Holguin. However, the friendly casa particular hosts can arrange for taxis for those looking to explore. It’s also a great choice for those just looking for a quick overnight in town on the way out of town.
